REQUEST FOR DESIGN PROPOSALS

HAZEN HARDWARE BUILDING MURAL in CLATSKANIE, OR

OVERVIEW

The Clatskanie Bloom Gallery is prepared to award a cash prize for the winning design for a mural to be painted on the former Hazen Hardware building located on N. Nehalem St. just off Hwy. 30 in Clatskanie. Members of the Clatskanie Bloom Gallery Board along with community volunteers choose to carry out this project to uplift the community, encourage creative involvement in the community, and to contribute to the overall aesthetic of Clatskanie.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Clatskanie Bloom Gallery has been awarded grant funding from Columbia County Cultural Coalition for the purpose of undertaking a community mural project. Design proposals are being accepted with a cash stipend to the artist who submits the winning design. Members of the Clatskanie Bloom Gallery along with individuals and groups from across the community will work together at various levels to complete the project. The design winning artist is encouraged to, but not obligated to participate in the painting of the mural.

PROJECT GOALS

Our project goals are to uplift the community, attract visitors and inspire residents, encourage creative community engagement, and to educate the community on the process.

PROJECT VISION

The Hazen Hardware wall could be considered a billboard for the Clatskanie Community, and with it we hope to create a sense of home and community connection. We encourage artists to search for inspiration in the Clatskanie Community. We hope that this mural will make a visual connection to a sense of identity that will help us achieve our goals. Any moment of time, or style of work will be considered. Extra consideration will be given to design concepts that somehow engage the public.

MURAL SITE DESCRIPTION

The Hazen Hardware Building is located at 136 N. Nehalem St. in Clatskanie Oregon. The wall to be painted is facing Hwy. 30. Wall measures 81’ wide x 19’ 6” at the tallest point. Details of the mural design should be kept to an approximate height limit of 14’ with consideration of possible business sinage on the top of the building in the future. Approxoimate mural size is 81’ wide x 14’ tall.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

Your concept design proposal can be a drawing, painting, photoshop image, or any other illustration of your vision. The layout of your design proposal should reflect the proportions of the wall to be painted. Images of your proposed mural design should be sent as JPEG files and should be labeled YourLastName_1.JPEG, YourLastName_2.JPEG,... and so on.

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY

All student, emerging, and professional artists living in the Lower Columbia Region :Columbia, Cowlitz, Clatsop, Pacific, and Wahkiakum Counties of Oregon and Washington are encouraged to submit.

DESIGN SELECTION PROCESS

A blind jury of stakeholders from across the community will select a winning design based on the following: how well the design meets the project vision, project goals, artistic quality of the design and image submitted, concept statement, the ability to translate to a mural, and the appeal to highway traffic at 30 mph. Submissions that are political, religious, or profane will not be considered. The artist that submits the winning design will be awarded a $1000 cash stipend. Entries that are not selected may be considered on future mural projects.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Deadline to submit design proposals is 11:59 p.m., Friday , May 15th, 2020. Late submissions will not be considered. Do not send hardcopies.
